Messervy family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  • Note for Clement Messervy, Generation 8: There were three branches of the family, one each in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Clement arrived in Strawberry Banke in 1670 and worked as a herdsman for Richard Cutts. In 1653 Strawbery Banke was renamed Portsmouth. Clement was a taxpayer in Portsmouth in 1673. He took the Oath of Allegiance in 1685. In the 1693 seating plan for the First Portsmouth Meeting House, in the Men's Side Gallery, third row, appears Clement Meserve. In the same plan, women below the stairs, fronting the pulpit, row 4, was Clement Meserve's wife. He was in William Redford's Company of Militia in 1696. The family later moved to Newington, New Hampshire. The following were probably all his children: Aaron, Clement, Daniel, John, Elizabeth, Mary and Jamison. All their children except Aaron changed the spelling from Messervy to Meserve. He conveyed his homelands, house, orchard, etc., in Newington, to his son Clement in exchange for his son providing for him and his wife on 6 August 1710. Newington was then called Welch Cove. Clement was a farmer and raised cattle with his father. Clement owned land at Bloody Point in 1714. This is now at the end of Pease Air Force Base. He left the land to his son Daniel who sold it to a Moody. They moved to Scarborough, Maine, soon after the second settlement. Clement's second wife Elizabeth died about a year before he did.
  • Note for Clement Meserve, Generation 9: Clement Meserve, also known as Clement Meshervey (1678-1745) b in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH; occupation carpenter, d in Scarborough, Cumberland, ME. Clement and his wife were charged with fornication in 1702, for having a child born before marriage. Thus, Clement jnr was probably born in 1702. Clement and Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Jenkin and Abigail Heard, were married by Rev John Pike on 24 September 1702. They both owned the covenant. They had nine children, all probably born in Portsmouth or Newington, New Hampshire.

He was granted a portion of the common lands in Portsmouth, according to "A true copy of the town rate made in the year 1698 by virtue whereof all the town lands to be divided in equal proportion according thereto". He was on the list of those that pledged for the minister's salary on 21 January 21 1713 in Portsmouth. Clement moved to Newington in 1713. He went to Scarborough in 1725, or "soon after the second settlement”. He had 100 acres of land at Black Point, Scarborough, Maine, and in 1729 they bought 150 acres more adjoining. His "creaturs mark" was a crop of the right ear and two slits in the end of the same.

Clement Meserve joined the First Congregational Church of Scarborough on 11 August 11 1728. His will, dated 18 February 1740, describes him as "Joyner, aged of body”. The inventory returned by Elliot Vaughan, Daniel Fogg and Samuel Sewall, appraisers, amounted to £896 15s. 7d.

  • Note for Clement Meserve, Generation 10: Clement Meserve, buried in Durham Point Cemetery, Strafford, NH. Lived in Newington, New Hampshire, Scarboro, Gorham, Standish and Bristol, Maine. He was a stalwart man, active and fearless. Clement was a Selectman, Commissioner of Safety, Delegate to Conventions, Representative to the General Court (legislature) and Ruling Elder of the Congregational Church. He was one of the original grantees of Chester, New Hampshire. At the first town meeting on 28 March 1723 he was elected a surveyor of highways. He registered his creatures’ mark with the Scarborough Town Clerk on 10 April 1729. It was "a Topp Cutt of ye Left Ear and two Splitts down ye top of ye Same".
