Descendants of Jean Dorey

We have reservations about several aspects of this tree, which has been compiled from two submitted sources and cross-checked with church records. The link from Mathieu at generation 3 to Mathieu at generation 4 is not found in the records. One tree suggests that the Philippe Dorey at generation 7, born in 1799, was Philippe Cyrus Dorey and emigrated to America where he married and had a family. However, this combination of baptismal names, at a time when second baptismal names were very uncommon in Jersey, seems most unlikely, and does not appear in the baptism record. There are also no baptism records for Philippe’s siblings Jane and Henry. The tree which shows Philippe emigrating to America (‘after 1800’) has him marrying Margaret Leete in 1828 and raising a completely different family. We do not believe that this Philippe was the son of Philippe and Judith Le Seelleur, but we are far from certain that the Philippe shown in this tree was their son, either.

An earlier tree in Jerripedia, Descendants of Matthieu Dorey suggests that the Philippe who married Judith Le Seelleur was married for a second time and emigrated to America with his second wife and baby son Philippe Cyrus. However, church records show that Philippe and Judith Le Seelleur were still married and having children in 1807, when Judith died, probably in childbirth. So the ancestry of Philip(pe) Cyrus Dorey is a complete mystery. It is possible that Philippe snr married again after Judith’s death and emigrated to Canada (several online trees show him dying in Nova Scotia), having a son Philip Cyrus after 1807, but still early enough to have married in 1829. But if he emigrated with his four children by Judith, as is also suggested by online trees, that would not allow for the first Philippe marrying, and raising the family shown below, in Jersey.

Based on the available evidence, all we can say about this tree is that we are reasonably confident about generations 1-3, generations 4-6 and generations 7 onwards, but the links between these sections are open to doubt.

Dorey family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
