Descendants of Jean Feret

This tree presented a problem at the top from its addition to the site in 2013. Although his marriage record suggests that Jean Julien was born in St Martin, there is no record of his baptism and given the gap in Feret baptism records in the 18th century, we have always thought that it is likely that he came to Jersey from France and that there is no connection with the earlier Jersey family shown in Descendants of Jean Feret - 2.

He was originally shown here as the son of Jean Julien Feret and Elizabeth de La Mare, but they did not marry in St Martin until 1810 and baptism records show their children to have been Jean (1810- ), Philippe (1811- ), Francois (1813- ), Elizabeth (1816- ) and Jeanne (1818- ). They have now all been removed from this tree. It is possible that their first born was the Jean who married Anne Richardson in St Martin in 1838, but this has not been proved.

Further research into French records by Mike Bisson in 2023 established that Julien Pierre Francois was not the son of Jean and Elizabeth, nor was he born in Jersey. He was born in Surville, Manche, in 1805, the son of Jean Francois Ferey and his second wife Marie Le Marquand, as now shown here.

The spelling of the family name in the French generations was Ferey, but Feret seems to have been adopted after Julien Pierre's arrival in Jersey. We have standardised on Feret from that generation down

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
