  12. OV; Colonial Civil Service. Philippe H Hocquard of the Cape Civil Service, South Africa, served in the Great War as a Lieutenant, South African Armed Forces. As a result of his surname and being dark, he acquired, within the civil service, the nickname of "The Frenchman". He died in South Africa: Mrs Hocquard, his mother, in a letter to ex-Jurat W L de Gruchy
