Evacuees' applications to return to Jersey for family names beginning W

The evacuation of thousands of people from Jersey to the UK in the months leading up to the German Occupation is well documented, but much less has been written about their return after the Liberation in May 1945. Of course, not all who left were able, or wanted to return, but there were 6,400 applicants to do so. They were required to complete a card giving their family status, address and employment in the UK, and previous address and employment in Jersey.

Please note that although only surnames beginning with W are included on this page, the entries are listed in reference number order, not strict alphabetical order of surname. The names are preceded by this Jersey Archive reference number which number can be used by subscribers to the Archive's online service to search for an image of the original document on their website. A completed application form does not necessarily indicate that the applicant returned to live in Jersey after the end of the war
