This tree was added to the site in 2011 and has been revised on a number of occasions since. It was reviewed in 2018, and again in 2020, when extra names, marriage and occupation details were added.

Francois William Balcam (1819-1900), who emigrated to Victoria, Australia, with his young family in 1863, was born in St Helier, Jersey on 12 December 1819.

Although there are conflicting versions of his ancestry, it seems most likely (Source: 2x great-grandson William Balcam's family tree at Rootsweb) that his parents were Jean Thomas Balcam and Marie Le Cras. Other sources show him as the son of Francois Bertram and Anne Renouf, but, as the tree shows, this couple were from a much earlier generation.

Francois William Balcam marred Anne Romeril, daughter of John Romeril and Mary Hair, in Jersey on 18 June 1843. Their daughter Anna Matilda was born on 8 October 1846, followed by another daughter, Clara, on 8 December 1850, and son Francis Walter on 16 August 1851. Francis Walter is shown in some Balcam trees as Francis William.

The family emigrated to Australia on the Naval Reserve, arriving in March 1864. It is possible that Francois' mother Marie and one or more of his sisters travelled with them, but records are unclear

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
