Listed building

This house is of a simple and bold design in the Modern Movement style which takes advantage of the steep sloping site. It retains its distinctive shape which has a clear vocabulary of structural concrete and infill panelling, although the relationship of the structure with the solids and voids is not rigorously held. The majority of the external fabric is retained. The house has a debonair quality and a real seaside quality that overrides issues of details.

Built in 1960s. Context: the English comparison is with Parkham Wood House, Brixham, Devon, of 1960, listed grade II in 2009; its architect Mervyn Seal did four such houses.

Detached house. Single storey projecting over open shed and garage on lower ground level, 5 bay house. Front (southwest) elevation: flat roof with slight pitch rising to northwest end; rendered chimney and water tank housing, 2 domed lights. Eaves overhang to line up with projecting gables and ground level base frame. Within the rendered concrete framing are panelling sheets and windows. The windows are 4 pane (fixed, casement and top lights) rising to underside of eaves. Entrance screen of solid flush timber door with 2 glazed panels to side; remnants of a canopy over door remain. The lower ground floor has garage doors and an adjacent open storage area under the cantilevered northwest corner.

Rear (northeast) elevation: windows extend the full width of the structural bays with panels below, those flanking chimney stack are full height glazed doors/windows; windows to the south of chimney are original. Cantilevered balcony runs length of section with garage at low level, walls below are rendered with 2 metal framed windows.
