Elias Neel

The Langlois manuscripts in the library of La Société Jersiaise show members of the Neel family in the parishes of St Clement and Grouville in 1309

There are also family members in St Lawrence and St Martin in the middle 1300s. In 1528 Neel family members are recorded in St Saviour as well as Grouville and St Martin. A Nicholas Neel is mentioned in St Ouen about 1650, but most of the name are from Grouville and the eastern parts of the island.

In 1494 Jean Neel was "a Jerseyman who had become Master of Arundel College" and a Chaplain, and tutor to the nine-year-old Arthur Prince of Wales. Together with Vincent Tehy he built a school for boys of the western parishes beside the Chapel of St Anastase in St Peter. The school was free and lessons were held from six in the morning to six at night. The lessons were given in Latin. The school was located on the east of St Peter’s Valley. It remained a centre of learning for the next 400 years. Nothing remains today of this establishment, but the endowment is used for scholarships to Victoria College.

Jacques Neel was born in Grouville about 1540. Four generations later, his descendants Simon Neel and his son Simon signed the "Oath of Association" in 1696. Rachel Neel married Simon de Caen in 1735 at St Peter. About the same time Philippe Neel married Elizabeth Dean, probably at St Brelade.

A number of Neel's are mentioned in John Jeans book as captains of sailing ships in the 1700s, and he also shows a house flag for the period 1792-1900.

Elias Neel was on the board the Channel Island Steam Packet Company in 1857. It was presumably his family that owned the house at 9 Castle Street, formerly Elizabeth House, in St Helier, which is referred to by Stevens as being remarkable for the luxury of its mahogany. The family owned a ship building concern, and the wood was fashioned in the owner's shipyard. The house dates from about 1797.
