States of Guernsey Greffe

The States of Guernsey Greffe is the official archive and registry office for the States of Guernsey and the Royal Court. Of particular interest to family historians, it holds

  • the original civil registration records (births, deaths and marriages)
  • property transactions (Date & Lire).
  • wills (on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Court) and Partage contracts (which document the agreement of how to divide property between heirs)
  • records of the proceedings of criminal trials, inquests and other activities of the Royal Court.

It should be noted that the majority of these documents are in French, are poorly indexed, and that the staff of the Greffe are not geared up to carry out family history research (even paid).

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has microfilmed the first three of the above categories (although not the indexes to the civil registration records), and they are available for loan at your local Family History Center.

Copies of the civil registration indexes and records are available in the Priaulx Library.
