1880s photograph album

These pictures are from an album of photographs taken in Jersey in the 1880s. The album is now in the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. See also Another slightly earlier album from the same Paris library

This picture of Gorey Harbour and Mont Orgueil Castle is particularly interesting because it shows work completed on the building of a sea wall on the east side of the harbour, with land reclaimed behind, ready for the building of the Gorey Harbour terminus of the Jersey Eastern Railway for the extension of the line from Gorey Village. We have several pictures of this area in our Gorey photo gallery, taken before the seawall was built, and after the track was laid, but this is by far the sharpest we have seen of the scene after the wall was completed, and it is also the only one we know of taken from this angle, which shows clearly the extent of the area reclaimed from the harbour
