- ↑ Settled in St Helier; Lieutenant in the Militia, who played a vital part in the Battle of Jersey (1781); Captain (1785). Anley, a popular hero, exemplified the problems faced by younger sons of formerly well-to-do families in an over-populated Island, in which the family was required by law to divide, each generation, its land. The grandson paternally of a successful merchant and maternally of a seigneur, Anley was obliged to make a living as a book-keeper in a butcher`s shop and was otherwise described by his political enemies as a "clerk at a slaughter-house". He became a champion of democracy; Constable of St Helier 1803-7 and then a Jurat (elected 1807 but disallowed, see biography), 1816-1827. G R Balleine wrote that "he became one of the chief speakers in the States, and from his profound knowledge of Jersey Law, was always listened to with respect": A Biographical Dictionary of Jersey, (Staples Press, 1948). Anley Street in St Helier is named after him
