The Brilliant, a government scout, was one of the early vessels to carry mail between the Channel Islands and England.

In January 1814, when the Brilliant was under the command of Captain Court, on a voyage from Guernsey to Southampton, she was captured by the American privateer Prince De Neufchatel, of 325 tons, twenty guns and 180 crew. A prize crew were put on board the Brilliant and she was headed for France, but mistook Alderney for the French port of La Hocque, entered the harbour and was promptly recaptured.
