Descendants of Matthieu Bailhache

TreeIcon.png

There are some very unreliable online trees for Bailhache emigrants, which have been copied and repeated time and again. This is an attempt we made in 2013 to bring together the apparently most reliable of those trees with Jersey parish records. We reviewed it and added more details in 2018. A further review in 2020 identified a link from Nicolas at the bottom of this tree to a Bailhache descendancy in Jersey. However, the top two generations of this tree need verification from the Jersey Land Registry or Island court records, for reasons stated in note 2. It may be that Jean (generation 2) was the son of a different Matthieu, who was the son of Jean: see Descendants of Jacques Bailhache

The tree was reviewed again by Guy Dixon in 2021, resulting in the addition of more details and names and dates at the bottom of the tree

A note was added to generation 1 in 2023 suggesting two earlier generations

Bailhache family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Of L'Etacq. Believed to be son of Matthieu (1630- ) (L'Etacq) and Jeanne Le Cornu; son of Jean (1610- )
  2. There is a datestone at La Porte, L'Etacq reading: 17 IBH ELR 38, which probably indicates the date Jean inherited the property. Jean`s father was definitely "Matthieu Bailhache, de bas de L`Etacq", as his marriage record reads. However, there were two Matthieu Bailhaches in the previous 30 years. One was "Matthieu Bailhache snr, de L`Etacq", who has been assumed to be Jean`s father. The other was Matthieu Bailhache le petit de L`Etacq, whose family was born between 1666 and 1688. The last baptism was of a son whose first name was not entered in the register. It might have been Jean, after le petit`s own father. It is perhaps significant that Jean and Elizabeth Le Ruez`s firstborn in 1711, Elizabeth, had as godmother "Catherine, sister of the said Jean Bailhache". The only Catherine Bailhache found, to date, of the right generation and age, was Catherine (1670- ) daughter of Matthieu Bailhache, le petit - see Descendants of Jacques Bailhache. If Jean was the son baptised in May 1696 to Matthieu senior, then he would have been within a month or so of his fifteenth birthday, on marrying Elizabeth Le Ruez in April 1711
  3. Of L'Etacq
  4. Godparents were Jean Le Cornu son of Pierre, des Landes, and Catherine, the father's sister
  5. Marie`s surname is spelt Boeux on the baptism of her four children and Boeux when, in 1794, she was godmother to her grandson, Billey Bailhache
  6. Her godparents were Jean Bailhache, son of Clement, and his wife. The wife was Esther Jeanne de Quetteville, after whom she was named. The godfather, Jean Bailhache, was a member of the Descendants of Clement Bailhache family
  7. Teacher, St Ouen
  8. Emigrated to USA
  9. Emigrated to Cambridge, Ohio, USA., where he was postmaster and served on a committee to establish a library. He was also editor of the Guernsey County Times, 1828-1830 and became a Justice of the Peace. He died in Illinois: Marion Turk, The Quiet Adventurers in North America
  10. Godparents: Clement Bailhache and his wife. This is probably another link (see above) with the "Descendants of Clement Bailhache", who were also their neighbours at L`Etacq
  11. Catherine was mentioned as sister of "Jean Bailhache, son of Matthieu, de bas de L`Etacq" when standing in 1711 as godmother of his daughter, Elizabeth
  12. Francois was baptised as "fils Matthieu Bailhache senior". His son Matthieu, baptised in 1737, had as godfather "Jean Bailhache, uncle of the child". There were, however, other Jeans. There were also, in his father`s generation, two Matthieu Bailhaches, both of L`Etacq, one nicknamed "le petit" and the other called "senior". Confusingly, the former was the elder
