Descendants of Ralph Vivian
TreeIcon.png

This tree was supplied to us as part of Descendants of Olivier Vivian purporting to show that the Jersey Vivian family is descended from the eminent Cornwall family of the same name.

The link between the Jersey family in the 17th century and the Vivians of Cornwall depends on Philip Vivian (1620- ), the son of Francis Vivian and Loveday Connock, moving to Jersey and marrying Marie Mourant in 1669, and their being the parents of Matthieu Vivian (c1669-1735) who married Margueritte Lempriere.

There are a multitude of online trees and references for the Cornish Vivians, and depending which source is selected, Francis and Loveday, at generation 14 in this tree, had anything between one and ten children. The one who is always mentioned is the first-born, Richard Vyvian ( -1724), the most distinguished member of the family who was Master of the Mint at Exeter, Member of Parliament, knighted and then created 1st Baronet by Charles I.

It seems clear that Sir Richard had a number of siblings, and his youngest brother was a Philip, born in 1620. So did he go to Jersey and marry Marie Mourant? It seems unlikely, because most sources show that this Philip died young.

And with the Vivian family having already been established in St Saviour since at least the mid 16th century, it seems most unlikely that another Vivian would come from Cornwall a century later and also settle in that parish. Church records show that there is a much more likely candidate for Marie Mourant’s husband in the Philippe, son of Philippe, who was baptised in St Saviour in 1624.

Even that date makes him somewhat early to have been the father of Mathieu, who married Marguerite Lempriere in 1687, and from whom a descent to the present day is shown in Descendants of Olivier Vivian. It may be that there was another generation in between but baptism and marriage records are not helpful.

But there is no harm in dreaming – it is part of the delights of researching family history – although dreams are all too often shattered by careful research, and we present this tree down as far as the disputed Philip, because it is by no means impossible that a earlier member of this Vivian family did move from Cornwall to Jersey and establish the St Saviour branch.

The early generations of this tree are taken from a variety of online sources. We have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the framework of the tree, but as with any family details this early, caution should be exercised with the early generations. Dates can be particularly unreliable and differ widely from one source to another in the 12th to 15 centuries. Another version of this tree which we have consulted has dates for generations 2 down which are some 50 years later on average than shown here.

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
