He was actively involved in a number of the major Victorian building projects, including the of St Barnabas Church and St Stephens Church. He was on the committee responsible for the construction of Victoria Tower in 1848, and was States Supervisor when the foundation stone of the new harbour was laid.
He was fascinated with old traditions, beliefs, customs and supersitions of the island, and he wrote down to form the basis for the book, Guernsey Folk Lore, which was edited and published by Edith Carey after his death in 1903.
He served as Gunner in the Royal Guernsey Militia Artillery.
La Société Guernesiaise
He was featured on a stamp in the 1982 set commemorating the centenary of La Société Guernesiaise.
His coat of arms features on the Bailiff's pew in the Town Church, St Peter Port.
