  • Poignand: In 1940 Charles Arthur Poignand applied for postponement of military service for his farm labourer Sydney Alfred Holley (1915- ). Holley also made an application in his own name citing his work as an itinerant labourer for several farmers as being 'in the national interest'.
  • Coutanche: In 1941 Philip Coutanche (1886- ) [2] was living here with his wife Emily Rose, nee Langlois (1886- ) and their children Ethel Irene (1912- ), Joan Marie (1916- ) and Philip (1918- ). Mr Coutanche snr had made an application to defer his son's military service in 1940 on the grounds that he was indispendible to the farm's operations. It appears to have succeeded. By 1958 the Coutanches had moved to Northdale, St Lawrence

Notes and references

  1. Elmdale is shown in the Datestone Register, but the property does not appear in recent almanacs. It may have been developed and renamed
  2. Although we have not been able to place Philip in any of our family trees, we believe him to be a descendant of Descendants of Pierre Coutanche (1545)
