Gentleman Porter

This office at Mont Orgueil, and later Elizabeth Castle, was a position of some dignity. Two Gentlemen Porters of Mount Orgueil became Bailiffs and one a Viscount. In the English Civil War, when Sir Philippe de Carteret died in Elizabeth Castle, Hungerford, the Gentleman-Porter, assumed command. The Gentleman-Porter kept the keys of the Castle, was responsible for the opening and closing of the gates, and for the safe custody of all prisoners, political and criminal.
