German Occupation

military court

A18SheailCourtRecord.jpg

The German record of the case involving Una Sheail, of Beaconsfield Farm, sent to prison for three months in 1945 for attempting to escape from the island. There must have been considerable unrest at this farm at the time because the records also show that Harold Syvret, of the same address, was sentenced to 18 months for 'attempting to create disagreement among armed forces and incitement to violence'. He was lucky that this came so late in the war because before June 1944 such a sentence would have involved deportation to a prison or concentration camp in Germany, and few who made the journey for sentences of this length ever returned

During their occupation of Jersey from 1940 to 1945 the Germans operated their own courts - military tribunals - and hundreds of islanders were brought before these courts for offences involving failing to surrender a wireless set, stealing food from the Germans, attempting to escape from the island, receiving goods stolen from the Germans, dissemination of anti-German information, and many other wartime offences. The records of these cases are now held by Jersey Archive and the documents are available to be viewed online by subscribers to their website. This is an index of those records, with index numbers which can be used to search for individual cases. The cases are presented in chronological order.
