At the age of five in October 1987, Martin John Pinel, the son of Reg and Rita Pinel, became the first person from Jersey to have a heart transplant.

The operation was carried out at the pioneering Harefield Hospital in England. Sadly he died five and a half years later at the age of ten at the same hospital.

His short but eventful life is recorded on a gravestone in St John's Church Cemetery.
