Muleteers in the Apennines, by Charles Poingdestre, 1864. Oil on canvas in the Town Hall collection, depicting donkeys, sheep dogs and drovers in the foreground and mountain range in the background. Charles Poingdestre was born in St Helier in 1829. He lived in Italy for 30 years, painting pictures of local landscapes and people. He was a well known figure in Rome and popular within the art community. In memory of Mr Malcolm McDermott, A benefactor to the deserving elderly of the Parish of St Helier. (Sophie Gorman, 2009)
