- Alfred Poingdestre (1860-1915) (France) son of Charles and Frances Maria, OV, Lieut-Col RMIJ Although included in the 1919 official Roll of Honour, Lt-Col Poingdestre was not exactly a casualty of war. He was commander of the 2nd Battalion RMIJ and caught a cold in Jersey in 1915, which turned to pneumonia, leading to his death at the age of 54. This was attributed in the Victoria College Roll of Honour to the 'strain and exposure' he suffered in his Militia work. He was born in France, and his parents continued to live there when he was sent to Victoria College at the age of nine. We have not been able to establish whether his parents were French, or whether they were descended from a Jersey family and had left the island to live in France.
