Stanley Alfred Bliault

Origins of surname

The origin of this French surname is something of a mystery. The closest we have been able to find is Beliard/Bliard, which is of Germanic origin, meaning friendly enclosure. Bliaut means a close-fitting often laced medieval tunic with long skirts and sleeves.

Early records

This has never been a common name in Jersey. It made its first appearance around 1855, with the marriage of Silvain Adolphe Bliault, from Portbail in nearby Normandy and Henriette Eliza Dolbel.

Variants

  • Bliault
  • Bliard
  • Beliard
