Descendants of Laurens Luce

TreeIcon.png

A branch of Luce of St Lawrence, by Guy Dixon. Judging from the names of electors in 1637 of a guardian for a minor child, this was a collateral branch of the Luce family of La Chênée

Luce family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Frequently linked directly or indirectly, in contracts, to “Martin Luce fils Perrin”, his contemporary and fellow parishioner. The proof of Francois being the son of Laurens was in the roles of the Cour d`Heritage
  2. A contract in which his son, Jean, was a party, casts light on this generation: Registre Public (R.P.) 8/273 (1629) translated: “Jean Luce, eldest son of the late Helier Luce, fils Francois, and of Elizabeth, his wife, daughter of the late Drouet Le Boutillier and of Katherine, his wife, together with Francois Luce, son of the said Helier and his wife, and Jean Le Boutillier, guardian of...., and Elizabeth Luce, younger daughter of the said Helier and his wife
  3. R.P. 11/275 (1637): “Jean du Bois was established as guardian of the under-aged children of Jean Luce, fils Helier, by the choice of Gilles de Gruchy [Constable of the parish], Raulin Benest senr., Raulin Langlois, Philippe Le Boutillier, Jean Luce fils Raulin, and also at the request of Marguerite Langlois, widow of the said Jean Luce”. Apart from Philippe Le Boutillier, whose involvement was to be expected, two names that stand out from the list of `electeurs` are those of Raulin Langlois, who was presumably a significant kinsman of the widow, and the deceased`s contemporary, Jean Luce fils Raulin, whose presence signifies the kinship between this early Luce family of St Lawrence and those of the Luce family of La Chênée
  4. Extente (1668), 85, which states that Anne Langlois` husband was Jean Mauger
  5. R.P.16/153 (1656): “Sara Luce, daughter of the late Jean Luce, and wife of Philippe Le Boutillier, fils Benjamin, sold to Nicolas Gibaut and to Marie Luce his wife, eldest daughter of the said Jean Luce, all and such part of the inheritance that she would be entitled to by the death of the said Jean, and from the succession of the late Jean Luce junr., her elder brother”
  6. R.P. 19/77, cited below
  7. R.P. 13/273 (1647): "Marguerite Luce, daughter of the late Jean Luce, and wife of Nicolas Benest, sold to Nicolas Gibaut and Marie Luce, his wife, elder daughter of the said Jean Luce, all that she might inherit by the death of the said Jean Luce” [who was then still alive]
  8. R.P. 19/77 (1668): “Elizabeth Luce, daughter of Helier Luce and wife of Jean Renouf sold to Jean Gibaut fils Nicolas 8 cabots 4 sixtonniers of wheat and a hen as a final settlement with Nicolas Gibaut, in right of his wife... [Marie Luce, niece of Elizabeth], Nicolas being father of the said Jean." Two of the said sixtonniers were due annually from Raulin Trachy, occupying the house of Francois Luce, two were due on the inheritance of the said Elizabeth, by way of partage, etc. The same deed goes on to show Nicolas Gibaut`s parentage: "At the same time the said Elizabeth Luce, finding that she owes, by way of partage, to Nicolas Gibaut, fils Raulin, 4 cabots of wheat rente, assigns it to [him] and his heirs"
  9. Note: The two trees, that shown, as above, and the Luce_family_of_La_Chênée, do not show the only genealogical stems for this family in the sixteenth century. The above research revealed also the following: 1. Leonard Luce (c1550- ) m Catherine Nicolle ( -by 1626) and had issue, all perhaps born about 1580-1590, Jean Luce m ( by 1621) Francoise Le Boutillier, daughter of Drouet [cp. gen. 3 above], Thomas Luce, Pierre Luce, Elizabeth Luce, Catherine Luce and Marie Luce, wife of Philippe Bisson: R.P.5/433 (1621); R.P.7/114 (1625); R.P.13/169 (1647); R.P.12/326 (1645); R.P.7/448 (1626) and R.P.12/236. 2. Onphrey Luce (c1550- ) married and had issue Jean Luce (1580?-by 1631), married to Magdeleine Benest. They had issue, all perhaps born about 1610-20, Jean Luce (liv. 1646), Marie Luce m (by 1646) Helier Piton, Jeanne Luce m (by 1644) Edouard Pallot, Elizabeth Luce m (by 1644) Nicolas Le Veslet, Magdeleine Luce m (by 1644) Jeremy Baal and Clemenche Luce (liv. 1644): R.P.9/92 (1631); R.P.12/255 (1644); R.P.12/256 (1644) and R.P.13/81 (1646)
